But, we’ve always done it this way!

We’ve always done it this way. We’ve never done it like this before. Maintaining the status quo. Do any of these phrases sound familiar to you?  Have you heard your staff use them, maybe parents or students? What about yourself?

Handling discrimination and harassment issues I often run into sayings like this.

You know just as well as I do that just because you’ve always done something a certain way it doesn’t mean you should continue to do it the same way.

One of the biggest concerns that I encounter among newly trained K-12 administrative investigators is the concern about doing new things. As a K12 administrator you’re no stranger to change.  Your world changes on a daily basis and you always find a way to adapt and evolve.

When we know better we do better. I love this saying.

We investigate discrimination and harassment issues not only because we are required to but because it’s the right thing to do and we want to do the right thing by our staff, students, parents, and patrons.

Maybe you haven’t always been the one to investigate civil rights issues or maybe you’ve investigated them differently in the past and now you find yourself in the position of having to investigate them yourself or to investigate them differently.
